~Perak Trip~
Day 1 (13/03/10)
That was the best part of my life. I woke up early that day feeling very enthusiastic. I had a quick shower and dressed up neatly on that day. Before I left my house, I double check my entire item again, in case if I ever miss out anything. My dad sent me to school. I was kinda late when I reached the school. Before the bus took off, I managed to have a last look of my dad.
It was a very long bus ride to Johor Bahru checkpoint. In the bus, we were all singing cheerfully and also do a lot of cheers. It was really great. Alastair, Adrieana, Amirah, Dzhorfan, Arsyad, Sharmain and I were discussing about leeches and worms. Although I felt disgusted, it was funny as Sharmain and Alastair made plenty of joke about that topic.
When we reached Johor Bahru, we stopped at Yong Peng for breakfast. Shafiyah and I shared a plate of Chicken Rice that I bought. After that, I went to the 7 Eleven to buy Bubble Gums and Chewing Gums which were very hard to find in Singapore. I had been yearning for those from two years ago. After that, we proceed our journey to Perak.
On the way to Perak, the tour guide gave us a good talk. Chee Kiat and I blew big bubble gum. It was fun. After the talk, the bus driver opens a music video on Micheal Jackson. I love Micheal Jackson very much until I watched till the end of the video. After that show, the bus driver opens a video clip on an American show which was very boring so I went to sleep. All of us, including myself, were very quiet, not ever a single noise because many us were asleep. I was really a very bus ride. I was hoping that we could reach our destination very soon.
At half past one, we stopped at Shalala, somewhere in the middle of the expressway for toilet break. However, almost all of us were very hungry, so we went to the makan area to buy our food. I bought two slices of pandan cake for RM1.40. After that, we went back to the bus to continue our journey again. I thought we were almost reaching to Perak but according to Irvil, we were 250km to Perak. I couldn’t believe that Perak was very far then I expected.
From the remaining journey to Perak, we had a DJ opening songs for us to sing to kill time. When we reached at Perak, we were divided into our own groups. I was in Group C with Sharmain. Then, a van brought us to Gopeng Rainforest Resort. On the way there, there were a lot of friendly villages waved at us. At the same time, I saw chickens which made me craving for it. Looking at the mud, it reminds me of leeches, which makes me feel very scared and frightened.
Finally, we reached our destination. I was really shocked to see that we were going to live in a rural settlement! I was feeling very happy as I had always been yearning to live in a kampong life, just for once to experience it. Then, the instructors introduce themselves. They seem to be friendly and helpful. Then, we had a safely briefing on various outdoor activities. However, they mentioned that they had to cancel the Treasure Hunting activity. At that point of time, I was really upset as I had been yearning to participate in that activity since just now.
After that, we went to our bunks which I find it was not fair as the boys bunks were nearer to the toilet and the girls’ bunks were very far away than the toilet and it was near to the forest which makes me feel creepy. However, our bunks were bigger that I expected. I put my bags into my bunk and left for dinner.
Dinner was great. However, there were a lot of flies flying around, so my drink was caught with a fly. I didn’t dare to drink it so I threw it away. After dinner, we played games like congkak. It was great and fun. When we were about to go for our night walk, it started to rain. So, the teachers decided to cancel the trip. Again, I was very upset and disappointed. Then, we had to discuss our presentation with our own groups for tomorrow presentation.
After that, we had supper and wash up. The water was really very cold to bath, so I had flu at night. At night, it was very cooling although we switched off the fan. It was really a great night.
Day 2 (14/03/10)
We had a great morning exercise that morning. The early morning sun peeped between the hills as it left the horizon. The air was fresh and the sound of natural makes me feel calm and relaxing. After the morning exercise, we had breakfast. It was a great breakfast. However, we are a bit late for our next activity.
After our breakfast, we set off to the Gua Tempurung Cave by a van. Jouhua and I had a very nice chat with our tour guide about leeches. He said that if we were to get bitten by a leech means that we had strike a lottery. At first I thought it was lame but however I decided to believe in it.
At Gua Tempurung Cave, we had to leave all our bags in the lorry but only brought torch light. In the cave, it was dark and warm. However, there’s one place in the cave there’s conventional wind. It was really cooling. At the end of the trail, we closed our torch light and listen to the sound. It was scared, not until somebody pinched my butt. At that point of time, I could not control my laughter so, I giggled.
Then, we continued our journey to the adventure part of the cave. That was my favourite part where we need to crawl or walk in the water. It was fun and great. That’s where I get to recognize almost all the Instructors. Since it was dark, I could not tell who am I with so, I had to asked, ‘who are you?’ An instructors named me as ‘who are you’. It was funny.
Finally, we are out of the cave. Mr Aw Yong wanted to have a group picture to show that we survived and get the way out. I thought it was done but we had to head back out in different way. I never expected that it turned out to be my favourite part of the cave.
We had to crawl in the water in one of the part. After that, we had to climb up a hill, which was very high and slippery. I got scared so, one of the instructors helped me out.
After that, we had to go down a slippery hill, which was one of the highlights of the cave. It was fun and great. However, we had to wait for another groups of visitors to go down first. I survived in going down the cave. After that, we had to go down a hole which was very less than my height so, I am not scared. Next, we had to follow down the flow of the river is heading to. That is where we get to experience crawling in the water. It was really fun. At last, the river brought us to under the entrance of the cave. How I wish I could go in again.
We dried up ourselves under the blazing hot sun. We were very amazed that Mr Chang did not look very drenched as he was wearing a jersey. After that, we took our belongings and left the place.
We went back to our camp site to have our lunch. The lunch was fabulous. We had plenty of it. Next, we went for jungle trekking by going up a forest hill. At that point of time, it was raining. The rain was not heavy so we went there. I was very scared of leech biting me. One of my group members almost got bitten by a leech when he found it on his shoe. I gulped.
All of the sudden, it rain heavily. My instructor, Dungs, was still moving on. I was hoping we could stop and divert back our way as I didn’t want myself get bitten by a leech or been caught by the rain. When we almost reaching the top of the hill. Dungs decided to divert our way to down the hill. It was really slippery as it was raining. I left my poncho in my bunk so; I was caught by the rain. Going down the hill was the scariest part of my life. I almost died from a fall. However, Dzhorfan and Jouhua made my day by helping me a lot so that I wont slipped and fall. Towards the end of the high hill, I almost died from falling down towards a big rock near a small river. Luckily, Dungs get to stop me. From there, I was the leading one. Dungs walked very fast and I could not catch up. Hence, I had to walk faster but I ended up falling down between the tree branches. He helped me out and grabbed my arm so that I would follow him faster.
I asked him if he knows the way out. He replied that he knew the way out following the tree stem which I find it was interesting. Finally, we reached the way out. I could finally breathe normally. My group was the last group to reach at the camp site. The instructors instruct us to go to the bathroom to check for leeches at our body. Sharmain and I entered in the same bathroom. She was very lucky because she had no leech on the body. She checked mine. I asked her if there’s any leech. She remained silent. At that point of time, I was very scared. Finally she responded something. She said there’s a leech on my leg! I got very panic and scream at the top of my voice! I must have scare Sharmain. She was panic from my scream. She could not pick up that pathetic leech and finally got a anti-leech spray and spray on my leg. The leech fell. Finally, I could relax. That was the scariest moment of my life!
After that, we had a quick shower and had dinner. I wasn’t really in a mood to eat. I guess the leech must have affected my mood. We had presentation for night. It was great but I kept quiet for the rest of night.
Day 3 (15/03/10)
That day was a special day for Shafiyah. It was her Birthday.
As usual, we had morning exercise again and have our breakfast. However, this time we are early.
We were going to have White Water Rafting that morning. I was really enthusiastic and excited for it as the instructors said there were not leeches. We were divided into our group by our teachers. I was in a group of boys. Finally, Cherry wanted to change with a guy from my group as she didn’t want to be with the teachers. Thus, I wasn’t alone but I was the only sec two in my group!
When we were on the raft on the river, we had Water Confidence where we were needed to float in the water alone. It was fun. After that, we started on our rafting. I love that moment. We had a good briefing with our instructor. I love the bom-bom part where we need to seat at the centre of our raft. After that, we had to stop rafting and had to afloat in the water with our team mates. It was fun.
Next, we had a rest at the shore. Some of us decided to capsize the raft. I went on trying it just for once. Before I could take a last breathe, Peiru and Shafiqah over turn the raft quickly. So, I almost drown but the live jacket saved me as it float.
After that, we continued our journey again. Almost reaching the finishing line, there was a chaos happening in my group. When we were going down the slope of the river where there were a lot of big rocks, Jouhua dropped his paddle and one of my team mates, fell down the boat and struck at an enormous rock. The instructor got very panic; he hugged the boy and fell in the centre part of the boat. Although it was a serious case, I could not help myself from laughing over this issue!
After the rafting, we had our lunch at near the village. My group had to serve the teachers. It was fun but I was all drenched wet. I was also having flu at that time.
Next, we headed back to our resort for wash up. The lorry brought us to the Waterfall for our next activity. We had Waterfall Abseiling next.
The instructor, Max, taught us how to go down the waterfall. It was very high. To be frank, I am afraid of heights, so I thought I would die. I watched everyone going down the waterfall. They were all brave. Until it was my turn to go, I could not control myself from fear. Everyone was all cheering on me. Then, Dungs, my instructor, gave me words of courage to go down. When I got the courage to go down, I saw a leech crawling on the rock which I am stepping on. I scream. I heard a loud cheer from my friends for me. I decided to pluck up my courage and move on. I had just realised that I move as slow as a snail. However, I survived!
After that, I sat down on a rock near the small waterfall. I was overcoming my fear.
After that, we had a shower and had a dinner. That was the last dinner we were having at Gopeng. Next, we had a free time. I managed to ask for some of my instructors’ email for connections. I watched my friends playing table tennis. It was fun as they crack a lot of jokes and their actions were obscene sometime.
After that, we had night games. It was fun. I was cheering on my team mates. At the same time, Dungs was really funny. He teased me about leeches and imitated my scream. I had a great time enjoying the laughter I had with the instructors. The great thing about the instructors is they remember my name very well including Tats, our head instructor.
After that, the instructor gave a sweet surprise for Shafiyah as it was her birthday. They switch off all the lights when we were at the canteen area for prize giving ceremony and sang a birthday songs with guitar as the background music for her.
I managed to pack up almost my stuff that night. It was a great night as it was our last night at Gopeng Resort.
Day 4 (16/03/10)
That day was a goodbye to all our instructors. I was kinda upset as the time travel very fast. That morning, we had our last breakfast at Gopeng Resort for the last time. After the breakfast, we took pictures with the instructors. The instructors were very friendly and helpful to me for the past three days and I could bear to leave them. I managed to purchase a t-shirt which the instructors wore.
We had our last photo section before we left the resort. Dungs and I made our last massive peace sign before we left the van.
When we reached Perak marketing centre, which was our last goodbye to all our instructors. We shook hands with our instructors. Next, we took off the bus. That was when Amirah cried because she could not bear to leave the place. I miss Gopeng the Cat.
It was a very long bus ride to Malacca. I managed to sleep for an hour in the bus. Then we had a stop at somewhere near the expressway for toilet break. I bought some snacks and a bottle of sweet drinks for in case of hunger.
At around one plus, we reached Malacca and had our lunch at local Nyonya Restaurant. I joined the sec threes’ group. They were much more fun than I expected. We did makan cheer before we eat. They served one of my favourite dished, Ice Kachang for desert. After that, we waited for Peiru before we left the restaurant. However, she wasn’t there so, we decided to go to a shop without her. To my surprise, she wasn’t even there. We got shock and search for her everywhere. Suddenly, she went to the shop that we were supposed to go; and finally we found her. I am glad she was not lost. At that shop, I bought Durian chirps.
Next, we went to the bus to reach our destination for shopping. I managed to shop a lot. Mostly, I bought chocolate, strawberry and pandan chips as I find them interesting because I had never heard of seen them before. Anyway, it was three for RM10; I find it very cheap so I bought it especially for my mum.
After shopping, we headed back to Singapore. We were very lucky because we didn’t catch any traffic jams on our way back. Once we reached Singapore, I called my mum because I had been yearning to hear her voice at Perak. I miss my family very much.
On our way back to Canberra, we sang different type of songs and cheer. I was relieved that we managed to reached Canberra by 9pm. My mum was already waiting for me at my school gate to fetch me back home. I am very glad to be back with my family with love but I wish I could still be in Perak.
just came back from Perak two days ago.
with loves,
